On the 17th of May, Perdu will attempt to think through (to) the end of the world, the one that’s currently taking shape.
Humanity’s place in the world has never been more uncertain. If it’s even possible to save something, it has become clear – and it’s still becoming clearer by the year – that this historical and geological period will be a difficult one for life on this planet, at least partly because of human intervention and influence. Our fault in this has become hidden behind the stories we've told ourselves; about technological progress as the solution to any problem, about supremacy as an inevitability of human nature and about nature as something outside of us.
Echoing Donna Haraway - "It matters what stories tell stories. It matters what thoughts think thoughts. It matters what worlds make worlds" - we wish to counter the stories of progress, supremacy and 'nature'. Through inviting the perspectives of Anne Boyer, Arno van Vlierberghe, Jayna Brown and Joost Oomen (via audio), Perdu holds space to envision and listen to alternative stories. That is, also, to inquire into new possibilities as well as ways of grieving over a world we are slowly losing. We would love to have you with us.
Joost Oomen is a Dutch poet and writer. His work includes the books of poetry collections Vliegenierswonden and De stort and the novella De zon als hij valt.
Anne Boyer is a poet and essayist. Her poetry books include The Romance of Happy Workers, My Common Heart, and the 2016 CLMP award-winning Garments Against Women. Her most recent book is a collection of essays and fables called A Handbook of Disappointed Fate, and a memoir, The Undying, is forthcoming in August.
Jayna Brown is an assistant professor at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Her areas of knowledge and interest include black expressive cultures, film, queer of color critique, anarchism, materialism and science fiction. Her new book, Black Utopias: Speculative Life and the Music of Other Worlds traces black radical utopian practice and performance, from the psychic travels of Sojourner Truth to the cosmic transmissions of Alice Coltrane and Sun Ra.
Arno Van Vlierberghe is a poet, essayist and literary critic living and working in Ghent. His debut Vloekschrift was published in 2017 and was nominated for the C. Buddingh prize.
