Perdu is glad to present an evening dedicated to the poetry of P.G. Wodehouse, a lesser-known part of his creative output. The evening is organised in collaboration with the P.G. Wodehouse Society in the Netherlands, and hosted by Perdu’s long-time team member Rob Sander.
Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse was born in Guildford, U.K. in 1881. His father was a high-ranking civil servant in Hong Kong, but the young Wodehouse grew up in England himself. P.G. Wodehouse, or Plum to his family and friends, wrote over a hundred books, hundreds of short stories, texts for songs, films and musicals, plays, columns and poetry. He is best remembered for his characters like Lord Emsworth, Mr. Mulliner or Bertie Wooster and Jeeves. The latter stories were adapted for the screen by the BBC with Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry.
Unfortunately, of all his work, the poetry of P.G. Wodehouse remains relatively unknown. Our evening on December 3rd aims to change this, by bringing his poetry into the light during an evening dedicated especially to this part of his work. This programme is part of the commemoration of the 140th birthday of Wodehouse (he would have turned 140 on October 15th) and 40 years of the P.G. Wodehouse Society.
Of his poetry, very little has been translated into other languages, but as part of this project several brand-new translations into Dutch will be presented. Other than that we will be looking at the poetry from a variety of interesting viewpoints, such as his own verse and poetry, the fictional poetry and poets used in his novels, the many quotes and citations of the English classics from William Shakespeare, Sir Philip Sidney, Alfred Lord Tennyson and more.
Peter Nieuwenhuizen has been a member of the P.G. Wodehouse Society in the Netherlands since 1996, and has been a board member and the chairman of the society since 1999. Recently, his bibliography of Wodehouse works appeared in the Netherlands, titled P.G. Wodehouse translations in Dutch and book publications in the Netherlands and Belgium (Utrecht, The Plum Press, 2021).
Rob Sander has been an invaluable member of the Perdu community for many years and is responsible for coordinating the bar volunteers and hosts in our beautiful theatre. He is also a member of the P.G. Wodehouse Society, and will host this event at Perdu.
